Biography of Chris Radcliffe MSc.

Home

Chris Radcliffe has a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Radio Astronomy both from Manchester University. He joined Marconi Space and Defence Systems in 1970 and assisted in communication satellite system design. He then spent several years developing linear phase filters for European Communications satellites both as designer, and project manager. He then produced both coaxial and waveguide filters for military ground stations. This involved high power, linear phase and very low passive intermodulation requirements.

He became leader of the filter group at Marconi responsible for all the RF and microwave filter work. This included phase equalised dual mode designs for communication satellites and high power waveguide systems. He was also supervising research work with ESTEC.

In 1984 with two other Marconi engineers he founded Phase Devices and was Technical Director and the main design authority. The company was bought by Com Dev in 1996 and is now part of Mitec Telecom. During this time he developed a large range of coaxial and waveguide filters, diplexers and other passive devices. These include linear phase filters , asymmetric filters and diplexers with stop poles and GSM dual mode tunable combiners.

He designed the RF Front ends for the Nortel Matra 1G BTS and supervised the design of the 2G S8000 GSM range. For two years he was primarily responsible for Com Dev Wireless R&D activities which focused on design improvements and novel dielectric resonators of various forms. Finally he provided the technical lead for the Com Dev 3G developments including RF Front ends, tower top amplifiers and multiplexers.

He has always had a strong interest in computing and has written design programs, been closely involved with circuit and EM simulation programs (such as Microwave Office, Genesys, Microwave Studio and Microwave Wizard) and has directed the implementation of filter design programs, ATE and CAT (Computer Aided Tuning) programs.

He has a good working knowledge of the Microsoft desktop operating systems and some experience of UNIX systems including web servers and networking. Recently he has designed web sites using some JavaScript and Perl. He is also familiar with PHP and MySQL.

Since 2000 he has been working as a consultant, most recently on coaxial and dielectric space filters.

He has a number of publications in MTT and International and European Microwave Conference Journals. The most recent was;

Synthesis of Advanced Microwave Filters Without Diagonal Cross-Couplings. MTT-50 p2862 December 2002
R.J.Cameron, A.R.Harish, C.J.Radcliffe.

He is married grown up children. Spare time activities include gardening, photography, computing and walking.
